So, chapter nine of Reach Out and Touch Faith has just gone up over on ao3 ... and if you can believe it, that brings us nearly to the end of the piece. There's only one chapter remaining--and what a long, strange journey it's been.

Spoilers for chapter nine abound in the interview below....

Whew, okay. That chapter was a lot.

Let’s get right into it, then, shall we?

I've been meaning to do this blog post for a while, but kept putting it off. Anyways, that twitter meme has got me deep in my WiPs looking for non-spoilery or lightly-spoilery excerpts from my WiPs, and I figured I really definitely should do this post now, lol.

So here's the state of things, as it were!

(If you're looking for the state of things in comparison with my last post, the last one is over here!)

I guess I should talk about wordcount first. Here's how we're shaking out so far--and please note that the numbers below contain both fanfic and potentially sale-able work, so the math won't add up:

January - 29k
February - 34.7k
March - 31k
April - 17.9k so far

It's been a bit of a rough April for me in comparison to the other months - lots of days I don't write at all, lots of days I'm sub-1000 words, which I try not to be, but it is what it is. I'm still on par for my yearly goal, so I'm just letting the months do what they like, haha. There's been some personal stuff going on this month which is impacting this a bit, and there's nothing I can do there except wait it out, so waiting it out it is! (That makes it sound very dire, lolsob. It's not dire. I just hate waiting.)

Anyways, on with the show. Here's the list of WiPs I've got, in the approximate order that I'm working on them in! As always, I take questions and comments and whatever, I'd be more than happy to chat about this.

1. Starkiller (482):  This one is done, and in the process of being posted! The Phasma-POV chapter just went up last week, and the Mitaka-POV chapter is going up this week. It's been a quietly-but-happily-received piece, and I'm really delighted for that--I knew this one was a hard sell going into it, because a) it's not kylux, b) it happens three-to-sixish-years before the kylux, c) it's an obscure AU, and d) there's Hitaka in it, but it's neither a shippy fic nor a smut fic.

2. Reach Out and Touch Faith (6461): Um, yeah. This one is done too? It's the weirdest feeling, too, because this has been such a big project, and such an emotionally intense undertaking in a lot of ways, and [personal profile] forautumn  and I have pretty much put a pin in it. I'm so fucking proud of this piece, and I'm extremely excited to start posting again in May.

3. old man a/b/o: I'm moving this one up on the priority list, because I was reading through it looking for excerpts for the WIP meme, and this is so close to being done that I think I could finish it if I just spent some focused time on it, it's just that I actually need to spend that focused time on it, you know? So I'm trying to make this one a priority as I finish up everything else.

4. DTD one-shot (the earring fic): This one is actually pretty close to completion as well, I think. I basically just have to finish off the plot bits, and then write some soft adorable sex to tie off the piece, so this, also, just needs a little bit of focused work, and then I can gently shove that out the door and move forward. It's 3k right now, and I'm guessing it'll probably be around six or seven when I'm done, so yeah, there's not too much left!

5. clydeland sequel: I haven't even started this yet, and only have the vaguest concept for it, but I was recently reminded that adjacents month is in May! So I want to give this a shot and see if I can get something out during May just because that seems like it's definitely going to be the month for it.

6. techienician fic with [personal profile] deadsy : We're going to try to put this one out in May as well! We reviewed what we have, and I think we're just going to sketch out the rest of the scenes, and then try to get the rest of it down and go from there. So hopefully this works out as well.

7. ancestry dot com: This one is a cleaned up twitter fic thread that I'm expanding and smoothing out slightly. It's nothing major, but I still would like to get it done at some point this year. It's a Kylo-POV fic, centered around that time he tried to help his adopted sister Rey find her bio family, only to realize that he definitely, one hundred percent, banged the shit out of her brother, and then immediately got ghosted, even though the redhead claimed Kylo's dick was the best dick he'd ever had.

8. light side noir au: This also used to be a twitter fic! But it got to the point where I wanted to do more with the second half of the fic than what twitter would allow, so I shelved it until I can go back and do the second half of it. This is going to be a weird one--the concept for this is essentially that Ben Solo goes into politics, but has a fairly major ideological schism with his mother, changes his name, and starts delving into some really unsavory politics. At one point, he's attacked in an alley, gaining his typical scar, and from there, his political views get even worse. He finds an unlikely ally, though, in the Senator from Arkanis, who begins supporting Kylo in all of his sketchy, sketchy viewpoints. It's a tough piece, because it's decidedly noir, and it's vicious, and it's very not nice, and there's more than a bit of fascism in it, but we're in Kylo's viewpoint, so he doesn't label it that way, because he's right. (UGH.) Anyways, it's a mess, but I do care quite a bit about the AU itself, once we get past all the problematic content, so I'm going to sit down and work on this at some point.

9. Aphelion: And, here it is--the long-awaited Hux-POV prequel-sequel to Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo/sequel to Starkiller/etc. This is my major longfic project for the year. I'm working off about fifty thousand words that I'd drafted a few years ago, but mostly need to pitch--but, thankfully, the fifty thousand words that I wrote also looked after all the intersection points between Ben's storyline and Hux's, so I'm really glad I saved myself that work. Yay, me!

10. filthy!Kylo: I actually thought I only had nine projects, and then I remembered that I had briefly conceptualized a tenth. I don't know what it's going to look like, but it's a post-Crait fic where Kylo is literally marinating in his own failures by choosing not to wash, and Hux is offended because it's bringing perception of the Order down even lower than what it already was. Hopefully this will be a quick fic, but I'll have to figure out what the hell I'm gonna do with it first, lol.

So, there you have it! Ten fic projects for the year, hopefully. It doesn't seem like it's that much now that I've put it on paper, but I'm also trying to draft two original novels this year, do edits on a third, and also put out a collection of short porno stories, so I'm going to have to find some extra time to try and whack all of this out. But now that I've got it all down, this definitely looks like a year for me, so I think I can just go from here and try to sort everything out.

Huzzah, etc. Wow, am I ever tired, lol.

Intro: Alright, alright, alright! It’s Phasma time—and what a time that was. Nobody is really at their best here, except for Finn, who is absolutely still doing his best, just the same as he was in the first chapter. I’m very proud of him, he’s come a long way in the time he’s been with Black Sun.
As with last week, we’ll break this down into technical details, and story details, and see what we end up with. (At best, I have maybe two topics in mind when I sit down to write these entries, and I always write them immediately after I’ve finished the final pass of edits, so my filter is low, and my exhaustion is high, and I have absolutely been marinating in my own words.)

So, that’s about it for this week! As always, if you have any questions or anything, feel free to comment here or on any other venues that you like. I hope you’re enjoying the piece so far—the last chapter is Mitaka POV, and it comes out next Thursday!

Intro:

Well, here we are again. Back for another series of blog posts/director’s notes/however you’d like to phrase this, and also back in the Come As You Are au, which is the site of my very first longfic! It’s possible this is the first piece in the AU you’ve read, and if so, that’s totally cool—the pieces are meant to be stand-alone, so you can start wherever, and then read whatever you like. Come As You Are is my most self-indulgent kylux fic—it’s a dance/ballet/burlesque/BDSM/sex work fusion, that deals rather intensely with themes of mental illness, recovery arcs, overcoming trauma, and being an authentic person/pursuing acceptance and all that fun kind of stuff.

I’ve refined my tagging strategy since writing Foxtrot in the first place, so you’ll note a bunch of tags on the piece that are applicable to the piece as a whole, but specific chapter warnings will always be at the bottom of the chapter notes. As always, if you have concerns or questions or comments or anything, you can reach out to me here, on Twitter, on Curious Cat, or anything of the like, and I will give you more information, redact triggers if I can*, and all that type of thing.

*(I know that sounds bizarrely vague—but let me put it this way, I can give you a version of Foxtrot with the lead-up to some specific off-screen self-destructive behaviour that Ben is involved in redacted out, because that’s a specific event in the story. I cannot give you a version of Foxtrot in which Ben does not have mental health issues, because that is the story.)

I generally use these behind-the-scenes entries to both deconstruct the things that happened in the chapter that was just posted, as well as talk about themes for the work, why I made the choices I made, include Easter eggs that couldn’t make it into the text, talk about some trivia, all that kind of stuff. If you have any questions about any of this stuff, feel free to reach out, and I can elaborate on my thought process. For Dollars to Donuts, I broke the blog entries down into technical considerations, and story considerations—and I’m going to do that here too, because I like the format.

With all that wanking aside, on with the show!

So, you may or may not be aware that I did a series of behind-the-scenes entries for my last longfic, Dollars to Donuts--kind of like DVD commentary, basically! I enjoyed the process of doing them--it helped me work out a lot of my process for the craft of writing, which I hadn't really been thinking about in much detail, and it also helped curb my desire to stick stuff into the narrative that didn't really need to be in there, because I knew that I could just drop easter eggs into the entries, and they'd be canonized that way.

Anyways, I figured better late than never on Fifth Chance, the clydeland fic I published the other day. If you haven't read Fifth Chance, spoilers abound in the read more....

ktula: a purple backlit keyboard (Default)
Helloooooo, everyone. I figured it was probably about time to do an update on my works-in-progress! So here we go.

(I did have every intention of making these a monthly thing, but it's, uh, *looks at wrist* March, so I guess that just wasn't a priority for me!)

My "official" wordcount goal for the year is 300,000 words. (I would like to write over 500,000 words, and the actual list of projects I want to do this year comes in at over 600,000, but I'm trying my best to ignore both of those numbers, and focus on 300,000. For reference, last year's goal was 250,000, and I wrote somewhere around 420,000.) So far, I'm making good progress--I did 29k in January, almost 35k in February, and am at 8k already for March. So that's humming along nicely.

I split my goals between work I can sell, and work that I can't--and so far, this year has been pretty seriously focused on work that I can't sell. (Fanfic, y'all. It's fanfic.) I did put 5k into a novel that I'm going to try to get agented, and I'll be working on that one very seriously in April, but I spent the entirely of December focused on finishing a novel up for submission, so gave myself permission to just focus on self-indulgent projects for the first chunk of the year here.

And, as it turns out, I really needed that--my mental health in January was extremely, extremely rough, and I had a hard time getting my feet under me for most of it. (Things have been better since--I have my regular cyclical mental health issues, but they've been at an intensity I can handle, instead of an intensity that I can't.)

But! As you can see from the wordcounts above, February was much better!!

So, without further ado, here's the actual WIP list. I'm only talking about fanfic here--so the numbers won't add up to the totals, and that's fine.

1. Starkiller (22k) - the first draft on this one is complete! It's part of the Come As You Are verse, which is my kylux modern dance/ballet/BDSM/sex work modern AU (I know, it's a mouthful). It's a novella covering a time period about 3 - 6 years before Foxtrot. It's a multi-POV piece, focused on characters who won't otherwise get much for POV opportunities - in this case, Finn, Phasma, and Mitaka (whose POV we've already seen in Reconnaissance). It's very self-indulgent--it honestly feels like it's mostly easter eggs and cameos, and I also don't care...I think the stories that are being told are important to the verse, but it's also a perfectly skippable piece if people don't dig it. It's also an experiment of sorts--if you read Starkiller, you get some major reveals for the upcoming Hux-POV prequel-sequel longfic, Aphelion. And if you don't read it--you get those same reveals at an entirely different point in the story, which should let you have an entirely different experience! It'll be kind of fun, I think. (Same as if, you know, you read Aphelion before you read Foxtrot. Entirely different reveals, entirely different emotional weight!)

2. Reach Out and Touch Faith (33k) - I can't even say anything about this, because anytime I so much as breathe, I am leaking spoilers, but rest assured that [personal profile] forautumn  and I are so excited to share the conclusion of this piece with you once we finish it. That's right--I put thirty k into it so far this year, and we're still not done. But gosh, is it ever *chef kiss*. The things Autumn is doing, wow. I just. I can't even talk about this, I'm so excited about it. (Also, the piece is well over 100k now, which is like--I can't believe we did it! It's so exciting!)

3. old man a/b/o kylux (7.5k total) - this piece is coming along! It's one I keep getting roadblocked on--in a lot of ways, it's a really personal piece about my own struggles with cyclical hormonal cycles, birth control pills, and a lot of other things. But also, it's a story about a canon kylux marriage that started out really passionate, and then ended up really estranged, and whether it's possible to rebuild something when both of you let it get extremely, extremely broken. I think I still have about eight scenes left to draft, so I'm going to keep my head down on that one and keep plugging away on it.

4. clydeland (3k) - this is a story of missed connections, mostly. Of the times that Stensland tried to connect with Clyde, and kept getting brushed off. It's Clyde-POV, which I find a little difficult to write? But I have the framework of the piece settled now, so it's just a matter of keeping up with it, and watching the source material constantly and repeatedly. I think the target wordcount for this piece is around 10k, though if it gets pushed to 15k, I'm not going to be upset.

5. techienician (2k) - I'm doing this one with Deadsy! And it's a goddamn delight, it's raunchy and filthy and fucked up and every time Matt opens his mouth, I want to die of second-hand embarrassment, and it's going to be a really good time. We've got a ways to go on this one, yet, I think. But progress is happening!

6. misc fics - I also did a couple extra thousand words on miscellaneous fics. I'm poking at a couple of twitter fics to get those cleaned up, I have a couple of concepts that I've been adding notes to occasionally, that sort of thing. Nothing here has really developed into anything substantial yet!

I also have some other collabs on the go that I haven't put any significant time into yet -- [personal profile] splinteredstar  and I have another installment in the vampire AU coming up, and Romi and I have a tweetfic that got intense that we need to clean up and stick on ao3.

I'm sure there's other things I've talked about that I haven't mentioned here too.

As always, if you have any questions, or want to chat about anything, definitely let me know! You can comment here, or any of my other platforms or anything.

Whew, so. 2018 was a year, let me tell you what. It's been my best year so far, creatively speaking. I really feel as though I hit my stride this year, and I feel much less conflicted about balancing everything.

My wordcount goal for the year was 250,000 words, and my actual wordcount was 416,503 (actually just over 420k because my spreadsheet is out, but I'm not bothering to go back and correct it). I did 20k+ every single month except for December, and 50k+ in January, February, and November. About 28.5% of my wordcount will (eventually) be available for purchase, 9% was blog posts/breakdowns of my writing, and the remainder was all fic.

I put seven fics out on ao3 in 2018:

reconnaissance - this was my birthday present to me! If you've read Foxtrot, reconnaissance is a Mitaka-POV look at one of Kylo Ren's performances. If you haven't read Foxtrot, reconnaissance is a Mitaka-POV thirst-fest over Kylo Ren, and his (nearly literal -- it's actually a staff) sword-swallowing abilities. It makes references to the events of Foxtrot, but said events are presented without context, so it won't be a spoiler if you haven't read the fic.

Blood Like Starlight - the very first installment in the kylux vampire au that I'm delighted to be writing with [personal profile] splinteredstar ! This one introduces everyone to vampire!Kylo (the pretentious fuck) and human!Hux (very long-suffering, very much Over This Shit). There's a lot of bootlicking in this one.

Next to Godliness - the second installment in the kylux vampire au with [personal profile] splinteredstar ! It's a sexy, sexy oral hygiene fic. (What? Hux knows exactly what Ren has been eating, and it's repulsive.) Also features Kylo's dramatics over Hux having not written while he was away--and Hux's sheer confusion that he was expected to, for some reason.

Dollars to Donuts - this is the big one. Weighing in at just over 180k, this fake relationship/coffeeshop-college modern kylux AU took up the majority of my year. I started drafting it in 2017, finished it up in the first quarter of the year, and then took from March - August to post the thing. It was a massive undertaking, and there were times I thought I'd never be done the thing, but honestly, it's some of my best work. I was extremely lucky that it was very, very well received, and I'll be grateful for that forever, because it gave me a huge creative boost, both personally and professionally.

what lies beneath - this one is a kink fill for a lingerie!kylux prompt. I completely skipped any hint of feminization in this one, and went straight for a pre-TFA classic kylux dynamic with added class tension instead, as I'd been reading The Little Stranger. It's a fic about who we are versus who we pretend to be, and includes one Force-projected boner, some very, very expensive underwear, and the written version of a looping gif.

Gilded Collar - the third installment in the kylux vampire au with [personal profile] splinteredstar ! This one is a petplay one, and starts digging more into monster!Ren, and also hints at how fucked Ren is after working for Snoke for this long. It's one of my favourite ones in this series--partly because of how it exists on its own merits, but mostly because of the super fucking awesome stuff that it sets up for future installments in the series.

Reach Out and Touch Faith - and, finally, the 2018 project that stretches into 2019, my collaboration with [personal profile] forautumn ! It's a canonverse/canon-divergence kylux longfic--basically a pre-TFA fic written from a post-TLJ lens. Of all the writing I've done this year, I think that RO&TF represents my best technical work, and it's really comforting because I can see the direct line from lessons I was trying to teach myself during DtD--and lessons which I immediately turned around and was able to use in RO&TF.

I have an additional 10k or so of fics that were drafted during the year but aren't yet completed, and will become part of my 2019 roundup.

I think that's about it for this year's post--if you have any questions, or anything--about the works, about my process, about my tracking, or even just about my day, please feel free to ask below!!

I'll get a 2019 planning post up once I've, you know, done some 2019 planning.

Reach Out and Touch Faith is a canonverse pre-TFA kylux fic co-written with  [personal profile] forautumn[personal profile] forautumn , currently being posted on ao3.

The below is an interview with me about the first chapter! Go read the chapter first...and then come back here for the behind-the-scenes content under the cut.

Chapter One Interview... )

Our work process on Reach Out and Touch Faith has gone like this--we brainstorm in twitter, everything from aesthetics to scenes to character development, and we both talk about everything--Hux, Kylo, sex, costumes, settings, scenery, cameo appearances, any of that stuff. Once things start to take shape, autumn distills it into a chapter-by-chapter outline which she keeps updated, and ktula periodically downloads the relevant bits of the twitter chat into a document. (The document is now over 100k words, and that’s just up to October, in case you were wondering how much we talk about this. It’s a lot. The answer is a lot.) Then we break off, and write the chapter we’re responsible for. Chapters one and two were written simultaneously, and the remaining chapters have been written in chronological order. The person who is writing writes, and the person who is reading freaks out over how awesome it is, and then goes in later and adds concrit to the chapter. Once a chapter is drafted and we’re both happy with how it’s laid out, we send it over to Deadsy for a first pass at a beta read, and then whoever is responsible for the next chapter gets started on it.

As you can imagine, with that amount of chatter going on with the fic, there’s a ton of information that didn’t made it into the text. So--it’s interview time!!

Each week, the person who did not write the chapter is going to interview the person who did write the chapter to get some insight on authorial decisions that were made, how our discussions translated over into the actual text, and any other sorts of Easter eggs and that type of thing.

Without any further ado--here is autumn interviewing ktula for chapter one of RO&TF!

What made you choose Kylo’s POV?
This is a complicated question to answer! It came out of a bunch of things, I think--initially, when we were trying to figure out how we were even going to structure this collaboration, we were talking about the merits of co-writing the entire thing, versus alternating chapters, and the more we talked, the more it seemed like we were talking about a longfic, rather than a one-off, and the process of blend-writing a longfic seemed really daunting. Plus, we’ve both got fairly different stylistic quirks in the way that we write, and we already knew that we wanted to write an alternating POV story--so it made a lot of sense to have one author take one POV, and the other the other. Each author writes in their own style, and each POV gets a distinct voice, so everybody wins!

As to how I ended up with Kylo--well, we were both kind of dancing around the subject a little bit, and I think I eventually bit the bullet and blurted out “I’m basically Kylo and I’m way more comfortable writing him” and you were like “huzzah, I have some things I want to explore with Hux here”--and, honestly, now that we’re 70k+ into the draft, I think that was a really fantastic decision, because you’ve done things with Hux here that I can’t even contemplate coming up with, much less trying, and I’ve been able to tap into a whole hell of a lot of Kylo characteristics that I’ve never written in any of my previous Kylos, and I’m really, really proud of how the whole thing shapes up.

How do you think the datapad got into Kylo’s possession?
Oooh! I’m so glad you asked, I have an entire headcanon for this. As we can see in the text, Snoke is really pushing for Kylo to be isolated and dependent and focused on his training--but not pushing for him to be integrated in with the rest of the First Order, the ship he supposedly co-commands, or even any of the personnel on the ship. Other than overhearing General Hux’s suspiciously-timed comm to Snoke, there’s no indication that Kylo has seen or spoken to anyone else--so I don’t believe for a moment that Snoke thought to himself “hey, you know what my apprentice needs? A datapad.”

So, where the hell did the datapad come from? Honestly, I think that was an Armitage Hux plan of attack right there--getting everyone linked into the First Order intranet would be exactly the kind of thing that General Hux would have as part of his onboarding package, and he’s the kind of man that takes pride in his tech--so it would have been important to him to have a datapad ready for Kylo, to be handed over at the end of his initial Welcome To The First Order, We’re Glad To Have You onboarding session. You know, the session that Kylo skipped completely, because he didn’t even get off the transport when they stopped on the Finalizer after the massacre at Skywalker’s school. Anyways, I’m pretty sure Hux arranged for the datapad to be sent over and delivered to Kylo’s rooms, in a “no need to bother the Supreme Leader about this, we’ll just look after it quietly, but get this into his room ASAP and I don’t care how” sort of a way.

Can you talk about the time-skips in this chapter?
Can I ever! Because yeah, there’s a lot of them. We’re missing days, we’re missing hours, we have an unidentified amount of time passing that is at least a couple of weeks, and could be a couple of months--and since Kylo isn’t marking the time very carefully, neither are we as readers. There’s some trauma that Kylo is dealing with in the very beginning of the fic, associated with his identity and the weight of the horrible things he’s done (mass murder is heavy, my dude, perhaps you should have considered that in advance of, say, committing mass murder), and it’s one of the contributing factors in him not marking the passage of time very carefully. I wanted to bring this sense of--timelessness, and the horrible stretching-out of a bad experience into his POV, and I especially wanted to capture that sense of long sleepness nights where nothing matters and time just keeps happening regardless of whether you’ve engaged with it or not.

Time skips are one of the writing techniques that I usually stress about--but I found them less stressful for this particular chapter, because we didn’t really need to be grounded in an exact length of time that was skipped. So while normally I worry about a) closing out a scene, and b) opening up a scene and immediately indicating how much time has passed, this time I mostly ignored b) completely, and just let the reader catch up as Kylo caught up. Plus, for the purposes of this chapter, it’s not like it matters to Kylo whether it’s this Primeday or last Primeday--he’s still lonely, and he still doesn’t know where his Knights are, and the feelings are more important than the chronology, so I let the chronology go. (Yes, I did. I hear you, anxiety brain, but I promise, I let it go. I am letting it go right now.)

In most fics I read, Hux and Kylo meet early on--what is the significance of a delayed introduction?
I LOVE DELAYED INTRODUCTIONS, let me just get that out of the way first. There’s something endlessly fascinating to me about the way that we build people up in our minds when we only have access to some information about them, not all of it, and delaying a first meeting lets us build that partial data up further and further and further--and then the person either does or doesn’t conform to that image, and the story can spiral out from there.

Here, specifically, the fascinating thing about the delayed introduction is that it’s only delayed on Kylo’s side--Hux, obviously, was willing to meet immediately, and was disappointed that they didn’t. That discrepancy alone says so much about their characters--Hux is obviously more grounded in the practical of ‘I’ll be working closely with him, so we should get into a good working relationship immediately’, while Kylo is more selfish, and because he’s focused on himself, he “can’t” meet because he’s not living up to his potential, and obviously Hux will feel that way about him too, and Kylo can’t handle the possibility of having his own anxiety about belonging reflected back at him via Hux, so he keeps avoiding authentically engaging with Hux.

I love exploring the bits and pieces of each other that they’re able to get in this chapter, and all the implications of what they see and don’t see. Delaying that meeting as long as possible also puts a lot of pressure on it that they wouldn’t otherwise have had if they’d met right in the beginning--if Hux had, say, been on that transport, he would have seen Kylo as the mess that he was, and they would have built their working relationship based on that. But because Kylo shut him out completely, that added pressure to their eventual first meeting. Kylo then layered additional pressure onto that by staying out of frame during every single call that he and Hux were ever on, so by the time they get to their first in-person meeting, it’s not surprising that a) Hux breaks into Kylo’s rooms to get a look at him, and b) Kylo immediately goes straight for the mask, even though he knows Snoke hates it, just because it’s the one thing about him that Hux seemed like he approved of, and everything else about the encounter just seems way too risky.

What was the most challenging part to write?
I’ve never written canon-verse longfic before! And I’ve especially never written post-massacre canon-verse Kylo, so those were the two things that I found most intimidating when I was getting into this, and one of the reasons that I’m so glad we’re doing this piece as a collaboration. When we were first starting to talk about this, we were leaning really heavy on the aesthetics of the piece, and that was a really good way to get pulled into it--but once we realized there was a hell of a lot of story here, handling all the emotions and that kind of thing without sugarcoating it got really intense and intimidating, and this would have been a really scary piece to tackle alone because it’s so outside of my comfort zone.

It helped so much just to start breaking it into pieces. We knew where we wanted to start the story, so I had a specific chronological point that I could start telling the story at--and I knew that I wanted Kylo to be in a specific mindset at the start of the story as well. If Kylo walks out of the massacre at Skywalker’s school feeling on top of the world, it’s harder to justify the dynamic we see him have with Snoke in the movies, specifically in TLJ. But if Kylo walks out of the massacre feeling not necessarily that he’s fucked up, but that he’s fallen short in a number of ways--and, specifically, if I make Kylo long for that version of him that did walk out of the massacre feeling on top of the world, and if Kylo feels that Hux would have walked out of the massacre that way if he’d committed it--then he’s got a good starting point for us to work with. The advantage of planning this fic in advance is that we know exactly what character arc Kylo is going to go on--so one of the primary focuses of this chapter is to set Kylo down on the track, make sure his wheels are pointing the right direction, and just kind of nudge him at Hux and watch him go.

(Not like that, Kylo, for fuck’s sake! Not like that!)
